Aug Tue 2020

Among cheering crowd noise, parades and card stunt in the 74th Chula-Thammasat Tradition Football Match, it is not a reflection of the unity between the two universities and many fun activities of a young age, but also to the power of the new generation to drive "Make a Change, change and make a move of society" to urge all ages and genders to have more awareness of taking active participation in social solving and environmental problems. In this event, GC, represented as The Adult has joined to support and advise the football event too. This tradition is the starting point for changing or adjusting our daily life to be more environmentally conscious and make a use of resources more valuable so far, plus waste separation and waste management in a more accurate and efficient way.

Waste This Way #Love the earth in the right way. This Hashtag is a GC campaign of this event with 3 main keywords; "Reduce, Change, Separate" which hidden in every activities of The Chula-Thammasat Tradition Football Match over the stadium, in the parade and also up to the grandstand. Let's take a look how to "Reduce, Change, Separate" from GC viewpoint in this event.

Reduce waste from the beginning of the use

In the middle of sunny and hot weather that day, a lot of participants outside the yard often visited the kiosks to hydrate the body with the sweet water. Luckily, GC has come up with a strategy to reduce waste from single-use plastic glasses by promote the campaign of bringing personal glasses to get free drinks in this event. For those who have not brought their own glasses, the Bio Compostable glasses were also prepared instead.

The achievement of the "Reduction" in this event are as follows;
The greenhouse gas 18,121 kg of carbon dioxide is reduced which is equivalent to planting 2,013 trees. The use of single-use plastic 2,487 pieces and 72% of waste to landfill are reduced.

Switch to use the eco-friendly materials instead.

One of the highlights of the traditional football event is the parades of the two universities that echo the views of students' opinions on various issues around and for this year, they presented both political, social and environmental issues. GC supported to help them find a way to deal with waste from parades and grandstand after the end of event which will be pushed to the process of Reuse, Recycle and Upcycling. However, recyclable waste will be made use further to ultimate the best benefit efficiently. About the grandstand, GC also supported a bioplastic packaging for lunch and snacks to re-fuel students’ power while they were on the grandstand.

The success of this "Change" was 8,880 bioplastic-coated food containers were switched to be used instead, switched to use the upcycling shirts made from plastic bottles for 3,700 staffs and 5,700 upcycling bags from plastic bottles.

Separate waste before dumping to make more proper management

The entire area around the stadium, the accommodation for staff and the VIP reception area, totally 21 points have been facilitated the proper waste separating bin under the concept "Pour Dump Pour Damp”. The step before dumping starts from pouring water / ice / food garbage and then separates whether Recycled dry materials (soft drink cans, paper mugs, plastic mugs, plastic water bottles, glass bottles) or Bio-glass or Stained wastes (used tissue, rice boxes, smoothie glasses, dirty hot bags, etc.)

Moreover, GC also gave advice on designing waste separating activities on the grandstand both stunt card side and audience side for both university students as well. The new trash cans are designed to be easier to understand for separating the recycled PET and PE plastic wastes.

GC originally has been focusing on promoting the concept of Circular Living or the use of renewable resources in daily life in order to contribute to the environmental sustainability. Thus, in this event, GC was supporting alternative materials such as GC Compostable and upcycling products to both universities which were staff shirts and bags as well.

The achievement from this event concluded as 4,992 kg of waste was able to be separated.

Once the garbage was separated, it will be further handled through upcycling or creating new added value. For example, all plastic bottles collected from the event are processed into shoes which will be given to needy schoolchildren further. While cloths and vinyl will be used as materials for the new bag to give to children in outback area as well. And, the wood will be used to build the house in corporate with The Mirror Foundation. Food waste will be used as animal feed and fertilizers. Bioplastic waste will be buried to decompose into fertilizer or use as a nursery pot further.

The importance of Chula-Thammasat Tradition Football Match in every year is not the result of losing and winning in the field. But rather to the reflection of energy of the new generation in what direction they want to create the change and drive the global society in a sustainable way up to their generation and the next.
