- Mr. Wathit Watanyupaisan: Business Development Manager and Technical Engineer at NatureWorks LLC
- Mr. Anuwat Pratumyot: Senior Application Engineer at PTT Global Chemical Public Company Limited
During the seminar, the speakers discussed the legislation from various regions related to bioplastics, particularly in the EU, which serves as a model for countries worldwide. Examples of legislation mentioned included the Single Use Plastic Directive (SUPD), Policy Framework for bio-based/biodegradable and compostable plastics, Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, and the EU Climate Agenda - Fit for 55. Additionally, the seminar covered Thailand's plastic waste management action plan and introduced bioplastics products from GC, NatureWorks, and PTTMCC BIOCHEM.
The bioplastics products introduced and marketed by GC at this seminar included:
- PLA: Marketed under the Ingeo brand of NatureWorks, with a production capacity of 150,000 tons/year. In 2024, the second Polylactic Acid (PLA) bioplastics plant will open in the Nakhon Sawan Biocomplex project in Thailand, using sugar from sugarcane as the main raw material to produce Lactic Acid, which will be used as a raw material to produce 75,000 tons of PLA annually. The highlight of PLA is that it is made from 100% renewable sources, is transparent, strong, and stable, primarily used in rigid packaging. Recommended PLA products for various applications include Ingeo 2003D for extrusion and thermoforming, and Ingeo 6202D for non-woven products.
- PBS: Marketed under the BioPBS brand of PTTMCC BIOCHEM, with a production capacity of 20,000 tons/year. The product is known for its heat resistance and flexibility, commonly used in flexible packaging. Recommended BioPBS products for various applications include BioPBS FZ79AC for paper coating and BioPBS FZ78TM for non-woven applications.
- Bioplastics Compound: Marketed under the PlastMate brand of GC, featuring products that meet the demands of various industries, including packaging used in coffee shops, dining utensils, and films designed for various packaging bags. The standout feature of this product is that it is a bioplastic compound designed to have properties tailored to specific applications, such as products with increased rigidity and heat resistance, or products with longer shelf lives compared to standard bioplastics. Recommended products in the Bioplastic compound category for various applications include Plastmate PL04006E, suitable for extrusion with an extended shelf life, such as in the straw industry, and Plastmate PB05001F for film-related applications.
The benefits of using bioplastic or bio-compound products include lower carbon dioxide emissions compared to conventional plastic products (according to research published in the journal Industrial Biotechnology) and the use of raw materials sourced from nature, such as corn starch, cassava starch, or sugarcane, resulting in biodegradable products that are environmentally friendly.

Award Ceremony and Opening of the Creative Plastic Academy Exhibition at Bangkok Design Week 2022
Sunday, February 6, 2022, Dr. Kriangsak Wongprarath, Manager of the Petrochemical Business Development Unit at PTT Global Chemical Public Company Limited (GC), along with Mr. Pitchit Wirangbutr, Deputy Director of the Creative Economy Promotion Office (Public Organization), participated in the award ceremony for winners of the Future Living Plastic Product Design Contest (Futuristic House) under the Creative Plastic Academy 2021 project.
The event was held at the Material & Design Innovation Center, 2nd floor of the TCDC rear building. The exhibition showcased prototype plastic products for future homes to address three types of living situations: Universal Design (for multiple generations), Preventive House (to cope with disasters), and Hygienic House (in response to virus outbreaks). A total of nine products were selected to be developed into prototypes for display, with the winning products in each category including a health-promoting fish sauce bottle by Team Baby Boss for the Universal Design category, a floating beach chair by Team SYMmetrical for the Preventive House category, and a virus-proof door by Team Sandbox for the Hygienic House category.

The Creative Plastic Academy exhibition was open for viewing from February 5-27, 2022, at the Material & Design Innovation Center, 2nd floor of the TCDC rear building, as part of Bangkok Design Week 2022.

The Creative Plastic Academy 2021 project is a collaboration between PTT Global Chemical Public Company Limited (GC) and the Creative Economy Promotion Office (Public Organization) or CEA, aimed at supporting Thai designers in learning about plastic materials, including their properties, forming processes, and design techniques through workshops led by expert instructors from various institutions, such as FIF Design Studio, the Research and Innovation for Sustainability Center (RISC), the Industrial Design Innovation Center (IDIC), and professors from Chulalongkorn University. The goal is to enable designers to incorporate plastics into useful products that align with current situations, while raising awareness among designers and society about plastic products. By emphasizing the importance of understanding materials, design, and post-use management from the outset, plastics can be utilized effectively and efficiently.

The seminar provided knowledge on Thai business sector preparedness, including the carbon border adjustment mechanism, Thailand’s drive towards Carbon Neutrality and Net Zero GHG Emission goals, both through national policies and through TGO’s initiatives that play a role in promoting and supporting the achievement of these goals. Case studies on calculating the Carbon Footprint of Products (in petrochemicals and chemicals) were presented, along with hands-on carbon footprint calculation practice with experts.
GC is committed to prioritizing its customers and business partners, and ready to be part of the effort to join forces, strengthen capabilities, and enhance business readiness for the company’s customers and partners, progressing together towards global sustainability.
GC Delivers Biodegradable Plastic Bags to Support “Don’t Mix” Waste Separation Project
February 14, 2023, the Thai Bioplastics Industry Association (TBIA), led by Mr. Wiboon Phungprasert, President of the Thai Bioplastics Industry Association, along with member companies of the association, including representatives from PTT Global Chemical Public Company Limited (GC), met with Mr. Chadchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok, to deliver 40,000 bioplastic waste bags in support of Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s “Don’t Mix” waste separation project.
GC, as one of the members of TBIA, supported this initiative by providing compostable bioplastics resin to produce bioplastic waste bags, which were delivered to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration through TBIA.
The bioplastic waste bags can be used to separate food waste in households and shops. When composted together with food scraps and leaves, they decompose into soil conditioner and bio-fertilizer within 180 days. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration will use these bags for food waste separation.
Currently, 3 districts have begun piloting the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s waste separation project, with plans to expand to other districts in the future.

Masterbatch Carrier
Masterbatch a concentrated mixture or pigments and/or additives incorporated into base resin to enhance specific functionalities during manufacturing processes which comes in forms of granule or pellet. The additives may be used for colouring (a "colour masterbatch") or for imparting other properties (an "additive masterbatch"). The typical alternative to using a masterbatch is to compound the plastic from raw undiluted additives. It can be applicable into various industries such as packaging, electronics, automotives, paints and construction.
